Rosapenna – St. Patrick's Links

St. Patrick's Links is the newest addition to Rosapenna Golf Resort's impressive portfolio, having opened in 2022 to widespread acclaim. Built on a dramatic stretch of Donegal coastline near the resort's existing Sandy Hills and Old Tom Morris courses, it uses the same magnificent dune terrain but with a bolder, more contemporary routing that takes full advantage of the elevated sites and exposed ridgelines above Sheephaven Bay.

Many visitors who play all three Rosapenna courses cite St. Patrick's as their favourite — its holes are more memorable, its greens more challenging, and the visual drama more consistent throughout. Several holes play over, through and between towering dunes with the Atlantic Ocean filling the background, creating a series of photographs that will be shared long after the round is complete.

At 6,440 yards from the championship tees and par 71, St. Patrick's matches Sandy Hills in length but plays differently — the elevation changes more dramatic, the wind exposure more severe, the greens more complex. It is best suited to confident mid-handicappers and above, though less experienced golfers will find it a thrilling if occasionally humbling experience. Resort packages including St. Patrick's are available via Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort.

Everything you need to know before you play St. Patrick's Links

Many golfers now regard St. Patrick's Links as Rosapenna's finest course, though this is fiercely debated among visitors. St. Patrick's is newer (2022 vs 2003), more dramatically routed through exposed dunes, and has garnered enormous praise for its hole designs and scenery. Sandy Hills has the advantage of maturity and an established reputation. The ideal solution is to play both.
Yes — visitor green fees are available for St. Patrick's Links without an accommodation booking. Rates range from €75 to €120 depending on season. However, the course is extremely popular and advance booking is essential, particularly from May to September. Book directly through Rosapenna Golf Resort's website.
St. Patrick's Links is a challenging course best suited to mid-handicappers (ideally 18 or below from the back tees). The exposure, dramatic topography and complex greens can make it demanding for higher-handicap players. There are forward tee options that reduce the difficulty considerably, and the experience is rewarding for golfers of most levels who embrace the links challenge.
St. Patrick's Links was designed by Tom Mackenzie and Martin Ebert — the same architectural partnership responsible for major renovation work at Royal Porthcawl and Rye Golf Club in the UK. Their approach at Rosapenna emphasised the natural landforms, with minimal earthmoving and a routing that uses the dramatic elevation changes inherent to the site.
Playing both courses in a single day is possible but demanding — each round takes approximately 4 hours. A more relaxed approach is to play them on consecutive days as part of a 3-night resort stay, leaving the third day for the Old Tom Morris Links and perhaps a visit to Portsalon Golf Club on the Fanad Peninsula.
