Rosapenna – Old Tom Morris Links

The Old Tom Morris Links at Rosapenna holds a unique place in Irish golf history. Laid out by the legendary Tom Morris Senior in 1893 — at the personal request of Lord Leitrim who wished to bring golf to his Donegal estate — the course predates many of Ireland's celebrated links by decades. Morris, who had previously shaped Lahinch, Machrihanish and Royal County Down, found the Rosapenna dunes to be perfect links terrain, and his instincts remain evident in the routing over 130 years later.

At 5,950 yards and par 71, the Old Tom Morris Links is shorter than the resort's other two courses and plays in a more traditional, understated manner. The holes follow the natural contours of the dune land, with minimal earthworks and a sense of authenticity that the newer courses, however brilliant, cannot quite replicate. For students of golf history and those who prize tradition above spectacle, this is the Rosapenna course to seek out.

The course was substantially revised in recent decades to restore original characteristics and improve drainage, while retaining its essential Victorian character. It is ideal for those who want a contrast to the more modern Sandy Hills and St. Patrick's courses, and is particularly enjoyable in the early morning or evening when the light is low and the dunes cast long shadows across the fairways.

Everything you need to know before you play

Old Tom Morris (1821–1908) was one of the founding fathers of golf — a four-time Open Champion, greenkeeper at St Andrews and one of the most prolific golf course designers of the 19th century. He laid out the original Rosapenna course in 1893 at the invitation of Lord Leitrim. Morris also designed Royal County Down, Lahinch and Machrihanish, among many others.
The Old Tom Morris Links is generally considered the most accessible of Rosapenna's three courses. It is shorter at 5,950 yards, plays to par 71 and follows a more traditional, flatter routing. It is well-suited to higher handicappers or those seeking a more relaxed round alongside the more demanding Sandy Hills and St. Patrick's experiences.
Yes — individual green fees are available for the Old Tom Morris Links for visiting golfers without a hotel booking. Rates range from €50 to €80 depending on season and day. However, the best value is typically found through the resort's golf packages, which combine accommodation with rounds across multiple courses.
The course has been substantially revised over the decades, most recently in the 2000s when work was carried out to restore its character and improve playing conditions. However, the fundamental routing and the spirit of Morris's original design remain recognisable. Several holes retain their 19th-century character — particularly in the way they follow natural land contours without artificial shaping.
Rosapenna offers three 18-hole courses on-site: the Sandy Hills Links (Pat Ruddy, 2003), the Old Tom Morris Links (1893, revised) and the St. Patrick's Links (opened 2022). Within a short drive, Portsalon Golf Club on the Fanad Peninsula is also highly recommended. A 3-night stay provides ample time to play all three Rosapenna courses with time for Portsalon as well.
