Ballyliffin Golf Club – Old Links

The Old Links at Ballyliffin is the original course at this celebrated club and, though it now plays second fiddle to the famous Glashedy Links, it is a remarkable layout in its own right. Winding through natural dune land on the Inishowen Peninsula, the Old Links offers a gentler but equally authentic links experience — one that many visitors actually prefer for its charm, character and sense that golf has been played on this land for well over a century.

At 6,571 yards and par 71, the Old Links is more approachable than the championship Glashedy course, making it ideal for mid-to-high handicappers or for those who want to warm up before tackling the longer layout. The fairways are firm and fast underfoot, the greens are well-maintained, and the wind — as always on the Inishowen Peninsula — is a constant factor that can transform a modest score into a battle for survival.

Many visiting golfers play both courses at Ballyliffin during their stay, spending two nights at Ballyliffin Lodge or a local guesthouse and enjoying a round on each. The club pro shop is well-stocked, the clubhouse welcoming, and the post-round pint in the village is an essential part of the experience. Advance booking is advisable in peak season.

Everything you need to know before you play

The Glashedy Links is Ballyliffin's championship course — longer (7,103 yards), more exposed and the host of the 2018 Irish Open. The Old Links is the original course, shorter at 6,571 yards and par 71, with a more traditional feel and slightly lower green fees. Both are superb links courses — many visitors play both during a single stay.
Yes — the Old Links is considerably more playable than the Glashedy for higher handicappers. The course is slightly shorter, the terrain a touch more forgiving, and there is no handicap certificate requirement. It is an excellent introduction to links golf at Ballyliffin for those who may find the championship course too demanding.
Playing 36 holes at Ballyliffin in one day is possible but demanding — each course takes around 4 hours to play. A more enjoyable option is to stay overnight in Ballyliffin or Buncrana and play one course each day. This allows you to fully enjoy both layouts and experience the Inishowen Peninsula properly.
Advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly during the summer months (May–September) and at weekends. Ballyliffin is a popular destination and tee times fill up quickly. Booking 2–4 weeks in advance for peak dates is advisable.
Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa is the most convenient base — just minutes from both courses and offering comfortable rooms and a spa for post-round recovery. The village of Ballyliffin has several guesthouses and self-catering options. Buncrana (30 minutes south) offers more choice, including the North West Golf Club for an additional round.
